The day we are leaving Muscat....and fly to Durban!

6 July 1998 - Durban

G: Today was a day of meetings, meetings and more meetings. Can't say I was present in mind as much as in body but it didn't seem to bother anybody. We ended the day with some drinks in the boatclub to say bye to a number of our friends and shake of the work atmosphere a bit before packing up for the airport. Annemarie dropped us at Seeb and of we were.... The Oman Air flight to Dubai to get our connection for Johannesburg wasn't anything memorable, we even got there 20 minutes too late. Caused a bit of a fright because on arrival at the transit checkin the ground crew told us checkin was closed and we unfortunately wouldn't be able to fly. A bit of verbal pressure rectified this fairly quickly and we walked from the arrival terminal straight to departures and sank in our chairs in the plane, longing for our first drink. Lucklly these came quickly and once we were sipping of our bubbly the start of the adventure seemed more in line with reality then had been the case so far....

Arrival in Durban

7 July 1998 - Durban

G: She is wonderful!!! Today of course I met Lily Rose for the first time. She is elegant, excellently maintained, totally colour coordinated (I can really relate to that of course) and unbelievably spacy! It will be awsome to sail her home to Muscat! The photo shows us after a day running around sitting in the cockpit, ready for our first glass of bubbly to celibrate our arrival. We were tired! Our trip was okay. South African Airlines are worth trying. We had a good time on board. The food was excellent, we had a few more glasses of bubbly (of course), some of the staff on board were very friendly, and the plane was far from full so we could each curl up on separate benches. For me no problem because I'm short enough to fit between the two armrests when I pull my feet up but I believe the night was a bit less comfortable for poor Erik.

All the flying was done according to the timeschedules and we arrived at Durban airport around 8:00 in the morning, full of anticipation of now actually getting to Lily Rose, and having my first impressions live! We quickly picked up an AVIS rental car and drove out to the marina.... She is amidst lots of other nice motor and sailing yachts but nothing at the jetty compares to her. Lily Rose is without a doubt the most beautiful yacht I have seen here so far.

Meeting John Carr was another of those events that starts of something that you carry with you the rest of your life. John has owned the Lily Rose for the last 15 years and loves her to bits (you can see similar signes when you talk to Erik already) and just sitting in and listening to the two of them talk boats and sailing is a pleasure in its own, even though usually these things go with one or more glasses (or even bottles) of wine. We had a relaxing end of the day sitting in the cockpit, enjoying the view of the lighted office buildings in the skyline of Durban on one side, and the yachts in the Marina at the other side. It most definitely feels like we can expect great things to happen in the next few weeks.... But first here will be a hectic few days to get the boat ready.

8 July 1998 - Durban

G: The day started off okay... apart from a few 'minor' glitches. Sleeping at the boat is extremely comfy: there are so many different spots that choosing one that you like takes some consideration. Breakfast in the cockpit, with the early morning sun on your face and the soft noise of the water and awakening harbour sounds is wonderful.
The satelite telephone, which should have been here hadn't showed up yet. Upon investigating what was wrong, we found out the whole thing ended up going through customs to be cleared while that wasn't necessary!!! Since we are taking the parcel out of the country again, and of course don't want to pay any VAT where not necessary. It will take a day to clear the package and we will hear from them.... This does mean we will have to find out how to claim VAT back.....

John Carr showed us where the Supermarket was yesterday and we had our first serious visit there this morning. We needed practically anything from dishwashing brush to buckets, from plastic boxes to toiletpaper, from pepper and salt to tea towels. This meant we didn't get anywhere near the bottom of the first list (and there were many more to come as we went along during this week).

We also visited the 2 chandlers that are straight across the road from the marina. We were introduced by John to both and opened an account such that it would be easy to get bits and bobs as we were organising ourselves (read: as Erik is organising ourselves.....).

Looks like keeping to our timeschedule is going to be hard work... But at the end of the day having a glass of white wine in the cockpit takes a way a lot of the stress and hassle! In John we found a companion and an extremely helpfull and knowledgeable person. But the best thing is he likes wine in the cockpit as well and I'm sure that before we leave we will have many pleasant hours like that more.

9 July 1998 - Durban

G: After a very long and hard day we ended up at the cafe Fish yesterday evening.... A very modern looking cafe and restaurant place in the harbour with a view of the sailing boats. Great fish menu and friendly staff. We didn't do it much justice with our dirty shirts and baggy trousers, but we did try some of the local white wine (note: 'some' leaves the no of bottles in the middle...). We have had several different ones in the last few days and are starting to appreciate them. We will have to investigate if we really want to store properly before we go, you know. The plan is still to leave tomorrow evening even though the amount of boat familiarisation will be minimal.
All the non-organic and keep-well food is on board. Tomorrow we will go together for the fruit and veggies and the last things we have forgotten so far (no beer on the list!).

go back

We have got the phone now but after connection it didn't work. It does everything, but we are not registered as customers from the local satellite service IOR (indian ocean region). Tomorrow another angry phone call.... Erik is getting very good at that.

E: We are leaving!!!! but not really.

10 July 1998 - Durban

G: Another evening at cafe Fish last night.... They are starting to recognize us and all know we are planning to leave today. Customs has come and checked all the VAT return invoices. Last bits and pieces are being replaced on pumps, generators etc. We forgot about the extra waterjugs until today so they were organised, and now it is just a matter of filling the tanks up and go (water AND diesel). But things turn out not to be that simple. The clearing of the boat and ourselves from Customs can't be done in a day. All the paperwork will be finalised tomorrow and we are staying another day! Final departure planned on Saturday now..... The boat looks fabulous now, after a number of days of total chaos on board. Everything is cleared and stowed and it finally looks organised enough to sail!

E: We are leaving!!!! But not really. Again.

11 July 1998 - Durban

G: Can you believe this?!?!?!? Customs just are not available on Saturday, where as the whole deal was discussed yesterday and agreed! We cannot leave the harbour today because there is no one at the office. It does give us an opportunity to spend some more time with the boat before we sail (as in bilge pump, autopilot, generator, main engine, antennas etc). It does mean that all the fresh food we bought will also have to be eaten. We had an enjoyable day as usual as the weather is fine, and we don't seem to get in eachothers hair yet. Yet. As long as whoever gets up first makes a cup of coffee (for me) and a cup of tea (for E.) go back
